General Food Storage

How do you store food storage?
In order to maximize the shelf-life of your food storage, you should store the food in a cool, dark, dry location. Click here for more information on food storage locations.

How can I determine my food storage manufacture date?
Since the shelf-life of food storage is largely dependent on the storage location, a manufacture date might be the best way to gauge your food storage. The manufacture date can be located on the bottom of your food storage can. Some manufacturers employ a Julian calendar system. Click here to read about Julian dates and print out a sheet to keep with your food storage.

Can I get samples of food?
Sorry. We currently do not send samples. Some samples are available in our partners’ retail stores. However, if you’d like to try the food before you make a large purchase, we recommend that you check out the smaller pouches to sample beforehand.

What is a #10 can?
A #10 can is a typical metal can that most people associate with a coffee can. The number 10 does not refer to the capacity or weight of the can. The can is 7 inches tall and 6.25 inches wide. How many servings are in a #10 can?
The number of servings in a can will depend on the type of food inside. The servings are listed on the front of the can’s label.

Freeze-dried Foods

What is freeze-dried food?
Freeze-drying has been a reliable source of food preservation for decades. Fruits, vegetables, meats and even full meals are subjected to very low pressures in order to extract up to 98 percent of the water. How long does freeze-dried food last?
Since the majority of water is extracted from freeze-dried food, these foods can typically stay on the shelf for 25 – 30 years or more! However, this depends on your method of storage. It should be stored in a cool, dry, dark location.

How do you prepare freeze-dried food?
The great thing about freeze-dried food is that it’s easy to prepare. All you have to do is add water. Some dishes, such as ice cream or fruits, can just be eaten without water as a lightweight snack.

Where do they grow the food before it’s freeze-dried?
Our partners prepare and process our food in the United States. We only use the highest quality food sources. The majority of our produce is grown here in the U.S. Some of our fruits and meats are shipped from South America and Mexico. We are dedicated to providing you with the highest-quality food storage!

How long does freeze-dried food last after you open it?
It’s recommended that you eat the contents of your freeze-dried food within 6-12 months. Once prepared with water, the food should be treated like any other perishable food. You might be interested in our video about the shelf-life of an open can of food.

Dehydrated Food

What is dehydrated food?
Dehydrated food is prepared when foods like fruits, grains, vegetables, etc. have water removed for preservation. The water is removed through a slower process than freeze-drying. The water will typically be evaporated, smoked, sun dried, etc.

How long does dehydrated food last?
The shelf-life of dehydrated food depends on your storage locations. However, if stored correctly, dehydrated food has a shelf-life of 10 – 20 years or more!

How do you prepare dehydrated food?
For the majority of dehydrated foods, you will need to cook them. Depending on the food, you should expect between 5 – 20 minutes of cooking to prepare the dehydrated food.

Mountain House is one of the largest established brands of freeze-dried and dehydrated food storage in the industry. They have over 30 years experience in freeze-dried entrees and meals.

Do you offer pet food?
At this time, some of our partners offer products that are specifically for pets.

Do you have gluten-free products?
We offer a wide variety of gluten -free products. The meals even last for 20-30 years.

Do you have lactose-free products?
We also have a great selection of lactose-free products.

Do you have pork-free products?
We offer a wide variety of pork-free products.

Do you have shellfish-free product?
We have a large selection of foods for people with shellfish allergies.

Do you offer organic or non-GMO food storage?
We offer fruits and vegetables that have no additives or preservatives in them. However, some of our partners’ products are not certified organic or certified non-GMO foods. We do offer a wide selection of organic food storage items.

We  have low-sodium food storage options to fit your needs.

 Water Storage FAQs

How much water do I need to store?
It is recommended that you store 1 gallon of water per person per day for an emergency situation.

Where should I store water?
Try to store your water in a cool, dark place. You’ll want to keep your water storage out of direct sunlight and off of cement floors. You should not store your water next to other chemicals.

What is a water filter?
A filter removes impurities from water through a physical barrier, a chemical or a biological process. They typically use a mechanical hand pump or a drip system. Water filters remove bacteria, protozoa, and microbial cysts. They do not however, remove viruses from the water.

What is a water purifier?
A purifier removes unwanted chemicals and other contaminants from your water. Water purifiers typically remove bacteria, protozoa, microbial cysts and viruses.

Meals-Ready-to-Eat (MREs) FAQs

What is an MRE?
MREs are military style dishes self-contained packages. They are designed to withstand large falls and are very durable.

What is the shelf-life of an MRE?
If stored below 60°F, an MRE can stay good for 5 years. The cooler the temperature, the longer it will store.

What is a Flameless Heater?
Many of our MREs come with Flameless Heaters. These packets allow you to heat your MRE by simply adding water. These heaters have a shelf-life of 60 years.

Are your MREs from the military?
Our MREs are made by the contractors who supply the Department of Defense. They are made to military specifications. The only difference is that they do include gum, hot sauce and come in clear packaging. Selling MREs that were made for the military is illegal.

How can I tell when my MRE was manufactured?
MREs use a 4-digit modified Julian date. The code is usually stamped on the MRE box or pouch. Our partner, TheReadyStore.com, for example, provides an MRE Shelf-Life Calculator in its ReadyResources section.

What is a survival kit?
A survival kit is a supply of critical items that can be taken on the go in the case of an emergency. It is an all-purpose kit that includes food, water and other survival necessities.

Where should I store a survival kit?
Since survival kits are meant to be used in an evacuation or grab-and-go situation, you should store your survival kit somewhere easily accessible and near an exit.

What should I put inside a survival kit?
